With the Daiwa Emeraldas reels you will enter another level of squid fishing, another level of fun, specialization, enthusiasm and effectiveness that no other gear can provide.

The Daiwa Emeraldas series, incorporates tailor made reels for Eging, the design of which has been based in the most fundamental principles of cephalopod fishing, which we analyze further below. One can easily argue that the Emeraldas are probably the top choice when it comes to squid fishing, even crossing the boundaries of luxury in the European market.

Many anglers choose to fish squid from the shore with their conventional, Spinning gear, or with their Light Rock Fishing gear. Those that have fished squid with a pure Eging reel know very well that even though this is possible, the feeling and the results one gets out of specialized Eging equipment can be compared with…well, in fact, nothing else.

The way we stay in touch with our squid jig, during all phases of our fishing session, from the first cast to the slightest contact it might have with squid tentacles, or even a rock, the way the reel will smoothly release the correct brake tension, are all important factors for a pleasant, easy and most of all, effective Eging session and cannot be compared to, by anything else.

With the E LT 3000S-H model, produced in 2023, Daiwa aims to create a financially friendlier Emeraldas reel, that addresses the budget conscious anglers, one that maintains most of the technical characteristics of the series and by removing technologies that raise the cost, without affecting performance.

The first feature that was removed from the new Daiwa Emeraldas, is the water repellent, Mag Seal technology, which offers protection against corrosion and unwanted particles. Lubricating the reel can now be done manually with any of the lubricants one can find in the market.

What Spinning anglers want from a reel is to be durable, fast, with a solid feeling that inspires trust, strong and sturdy breaks, etc. In Eging all these are not only unnecessary, but in fact contribute the exact opposite to our fishing session. In an Eging reel, we need a slow Gear Ratio and a shorter retrieve per crank ratio, in a few words we need a “slower” reel.

Τhe jerks we will perform in Mediterranean waters for Squids, or Cuttlefish are nothing like the great, nervous jerks performed by Japanese anglers. A slower reel will allow our squid jig to act more naturally. Daiwa maintained in the Emeraldas X LT a Gear Ratio of 5.6:1 and a retrieve of 84 cm.

In an Eging reel, we need light, but very smooth and progressive reel drags that in conjunction with the curve of our rod, will ensure that no tentacle will be ripped off by any unwanted tension, even when a cephalopod has been superficially hooked. The Daiwa drag is egging-oriented and named ATD.

We are dealing with drags that automatically detect the backwards force and the sudden pauses squid make when caught and that automatically set the drags to optimal performance, so that the squid does not escape even during the sudden tension of the hook up. This drag system is an incredible innovation by Daiwa that gets egging into another level of competence and precision. The max drag force is 10 kg.

Fishing squids demands continuous casting, for long hours with the rod and reel in our hands and “just any” spinning, reel, especially a bottom shelf and heavier one, will feel completely uncomfortable after a point and onwards. Having said that, the weight of the Daiwa Emeraldas X LT, tends a little towards the heavy side, as it weighs 215 gr. It does belong in the LT series (L stands for Light and T stands for Tough) is as strong as it gets, but as cost decreases, the same happens to the usage of super light, building materials.

The way the reel handle turns is supported by the Air Rotor concept and 5 + 1 ball bearings that deliver the precision and the smoothness of the mechanical parts.

Our braid (ideally between 0.6 and 0.8 PE) should be minimally handled by the reel, so as not to force it by dragging it into any unwanted, jerky movement. If, nevertheless we insist on a fast reel because our style of fishing is more fast and aggressive, or because we fish into much deeper water, we must employ the services of a reel that has a smooth and sensitive reel handle. We need such specs, so that at any point, we can remain in touch with our Egi at the other end of our braid.
